LESSON 5 – ABRAHAM WHO OBEYED GOD’S CALL
Old Testament
The people of Ur, in the city of Chaldeans, worshiped the idols. Worshipping idols is against God’s commandments.
There was a family here who worshipped God: Terah and his family. His sons were Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (son of Haran), and his daughter-in-law Sarai (Abram’s wife) and set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they reached Haran, they settled there. Terah died in Haran.
God ordered Abram:
- GET OUT OF YOUR COUNTRY, FROM YOUR FAMILY AND FROM YOUR FATHER’S HOUSE, TO A LAND THAT I WILL SHOW YOU.
- I WILL MAKE YOU A GREAT NATION.
- I WILL BLESS YOU AND MAKE YOUR NAME GREAT.
- YOU SHALL BE A BLESSING.
- I WILL BLESS THOSE WHO BLESS YOU, AND I WILL CURSE HIM WHO CURSE YOU.
- IN YOU, ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED.
Abram obeyed the Lord and left from his home. He was 75 years old when he departed from Haran. Abram took Sarai, his wife and Lot, his brother’s son, along with all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran. They left to go to the land of Canaan.
Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as to the land of Moreh. The Canaanites were then in the land. The Lord appeared to Abram and said,
There Abram built an altar to the Lord, who appeared to him.
Genesis 12:3
“I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
I will obey my Lord. I will be blessed. And I will praise Him.
