LESSON 7 – SACRIFICE OF ABRAHAM
Lesson 7 – Sacrifice of Abraham (Genesis 22)
Abraham was a person who thanked God by providing sacrifice. One day, God decided to test the faith of Abraham. God said,
Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac, and he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
He asked his men to wait at a distance and told them that he and Isaac will go and worship and come back. Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. And they went together. Isaac asked, “The fire and the wood are here. Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar, laid wood in order, bound Isaac, his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. Then Abraham put forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham, do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him. I know that you fear God. You have not withheld your son, your only son, from God.”
Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. The place is then named as Yahweh Yireh.
The angel of God called to Abraham a second time from heaven:
- I shall indeed bless you as you have not withheld your son, your only son.
- I will bless you and I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore.
- Your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.
- By your descendants shall all the nations of the Earth bless themselves because you have obeyed God’s voice.
Abraham returned to his young men. They went together to Beersheba.
Bible Verse:
Genesis 22:16-17 — Because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will bless you and multiply your descendants.
My Decision:
I will not love anything more than God.
