LESSON 19: Jesus and Samaritan Woman (John Chapter 4)
Lesson 19: Jesus and Samaritan Woman
(John Chapter 4)
We already learned about Nicodemus, who was a rich and important Jewish leader that quietly went to Jesus to learn from Him.
Today, we’ll learn about a very different person — a Samaritan woman — and how Jesus lovingly spoke to her and helped her believe in Him.
In those days, the Jews and Samaritans did not like each other and usually didn’t talk to one another. But Jesus cared for everyone, no matter who they were.
Jesus was traveling from Judea to Galilee and passed through Samaria. He stopped at a town called Sychar and sat near a well to rest. It was noon, and His disciples had gone to buy food.
A Samaritan woman came to the well to get water, and Jesus started talking to her.
Jesus: “Will you give me some water to drink?”
Woman: “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for water?”
(Jews usually did not speak to Samaritans.)
Jesus: “If you knew the gift of God and who is asking you for water, you would ask Him — and He would give you living water.”
Woman: “But Sir, you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep! Where will you get this living water?”
Jesus: “Whoever drinks this water (from the well) will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give will never be thirsty again. It will become a spring inside them — giving eternal life.”
Jesus wasn’t talking about regular water. He was talking about God’s Holy Spirit and eternal life — the kind of life that brings peace, joy, and a close relationship with God.
The woman was curious and wanted this water. Jesus then told her, “Go and call your husband.”
The woman said, “I have no husband.”
Jesus replied, “You are right. You had five husbands, and the man you are with now is not your husband.”
The woman was shocked. She knew Jesus was no ordinary man and said, “Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.” Then Jesus revealed something even greater:
“I am the Messiah.”
She believed Him.
The woman was so excited that she left her water jar and ran back to her town. She told the people:
“Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could He be the Messiah?”
The people were curious. Many came to see Jesus. They asked Him to stay, and He stayed with them for two days.
Because of His words and the woman’s testimony, many Samaritans believed in Jesus. One woman’s conversation with Jesus helped bring an entire town closer to God.
What Can We Learn?
- Jesus loves everyone, no matter who they are.
- Jesus wants to give us living water — His Spirit and eternal life.
- When we know Jesus, we should share His love with others, just like the Samaritan woman did.
- We should believe in Jesus not just with our mind, but with our heart and actions.
John 4:34: “My food”, said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”
