LESSON 1: ABRAHAM’S BROTHERLY LOVE
Lesson 1 – Abraham’s Brotherly Love
As God commanded, Abram went up from Egypt, with his wife Sarai and all that he had. He was accompanied by his nephew, Lot, son of Haran. On his way, Abram set up an altar to praise God.
Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, herds, and tents. Their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together. There was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and Lot’s livestock. As conflicts between brothers are not good, Abram gave Lot the permission to choose a place which he wishes to dwell in. Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. They separated from each other. Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan.
After Lot Separated from Abram, God Said to Abram:
- Lift your eyes and look from the place where you are—southward, eastward, and westward. I will give you and your descendants the whole land that you see.
- I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth.
- If a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered.
- Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.
After some time, there was a war in Sodom, where Lot dwelt. The people who won the war captured Lot and took him away. They took away all his belongings. Abram found out about this incident. He armed his 318 trained servants who were born in his own house and went to save the captives. He brought back Lot and his goods. When they returned, the king of Salem, Melchizedek, brought out bread and wine. Since he was the Priest of God Most High, he blessed Abram after Abram gave him a tenth of everything as his offering.
Note to Teachers:
- The aim of the lesson is to make the students understand the command of Jesus Christ: “As I have loved you, so you must love each other.”
- Make them know that those who obey the command of God will be blessed.
