LESSON 8: THE WIDOW FROM ZAREPHATH
Lesson 8 – The Widow from Zarephath
We have learnt that God’s plans are great. Let us see another miracle of God.
There was a poor widow in Zarephath. As her husband had died, there was no one to care for and support her. There was a great famine and people were struggling to get food. She opened the bin of flour and saw little flour and little oil. She decided to make bread for herself and her son and die after that. She started gathering the sticks.
That was when Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead came to her. He asked her for a cup of water and a morsel of bread for himself. She told him about her plan.
“Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterwards make some for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.”
She went away and did accordingly. She and her son lived happily. The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry.
One day, the son of the woman became sick. There was no breath left on him. She called up Elijah to say this. Elijah took the boy and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed. He stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said,
“O LORD MY GOD, I PRAY, LET THIS CHILD’S SOUL COME BACK TO HIM.”
The Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived. Elijah gave the boy to his mother. The woman said that Elijah is a man of God and that the word of the Lord in his mouth is the truth.
