LESSON 9: JOHN THE BAPTIST
Lesson 9 – John the Baptist
We all have different types of clothing for various occasions. When we go to school, we wear uniforms. As we look around, we can see many styles of clothing worn by different people.
Now, let’s learn about a man who dressed in a very unique way. He wore a garment made of camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His diet consisted of locusts and wild honey. This extraordinary man was John the Baptist.
John the Baptist was born to Zechariah, a priest, and his wife Elizabeth, according to God’s promise during the reign of King Herod. The angel had foretold his birth, saying:
“He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.”

John lived and preached in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming,”Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
John’s mission was to prepare the way for Jesus Christ, the Son of God. His message of repentance reached many people. They came to him to confess their sins and receive baptism in the River Jordan.
John preached powerful messages to those he baptized:
- “Prepare the way for the Lord; make His paths straight.”
- “I baptize you with water, but He who comes after me is mightier than I. I am not even worthy to carry His sandals.”
- “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”
Do you understand who John was referring to in his teachings? He was speaking about our Savior, Jesus Christ.
John’s life was dedicated to preparing people to receive Jesus. His message remains relevant today—we must repent, turn to God, and prepare our hearts for Christ.
He preached in the wilderness of Judea, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” Isaiah had prophesied about this man. He was John the Baptist.

Note to Teachers:
- The main goal of this chapter is to help children understand that God is the only Savior and to encourage them to live according to His commandments.
- Students should learn to surrender their personal interests and embrace God’s will in their lives. True repentance happens when we align our actions with God’s plan. For example, when children obey their parents, they are fulfilling God’s purpose and demonstrating repentance in their daily lives.
